Landfill Gas (LFG)
A mixture of methane and carbon dioxide produced by the decomposition of organic waste in landfills.
Landfill gas is generated as organic materials buried in landfills decompose anaerobically over decades. LFG typically contains 45-60% methane and 40-55% CO₂, along with trace compounds. The EPA's Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) promotes the capture and use of LFG for electricity generation, direct thermal use, or upgrading to pipeline-quality renewable natural gas. There are over 500 operational LFG energy projects in the US.
