Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF)

Processed municipal waste that has been shredded, dried, and pelletized for use as a fuel.

Refuse-derived fuel is produced by mechanically processing municipal solid waste to remove non-combustibles (metals, glass, grit) and shredding the remaining material into uniform pieces or pellets. RDF has a higher and more consistent energy content than raw waste (4,500-6,500 BTU/lb) and can be co-fired in cement kilns, industrial boilers, or dedicated RDF power plants.
